Although Germany defeated the United States 1-0 in their most recent World Cup match, both teams were nonetheless able to advance to the second stage due to Portugal’s 2-1 win over Ghana. Germany ended up with 7 points, first in the group, whereas the US and Portugal each had 4, and Ghana 1. The US goal count surpassed Portugal’s, putting the Americans in second.

US advancement was mostly unexpected–Germany and Portugal have been widely perceived as some of the strongest teams in the worldwide soccer community, as is seen in the FIFA/Coca-Cola World Ranking. Still, the Americans’ victorious performance early in the tournament (particularly in the match against Ghana) greatly contributed to their current success.

The sixteen qualifying teams are Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Uruguay, Netherlands, Mexico, Costa Rica, Greece, France, Nigeria, Germany, Algeria, Argentina, Switzerland, Belgium, and the United States.
